Certain items cannot be shipped to Africa by air or sea cargo, including dangerous goods, weapons, illegal drugs, cash and high-value valuables, counterfeit goods, and most perishables. Air freight has stricter rules than sea cargo. If you're unsure whether something can travel, ask Rolats before you pack — WhatsApp +44 7735 369702 — and we'll advise.

Why some items can't be shipped

International air and sea freight are governed by carrier rules, UK export law and destination-country import restrictions. Some items are prohibited (never allowed) and others are restricted (allowed only with special handling, documentation or permits). Air freight rules are stricter than sea cargo, especially for anything flammable, pressurised or battery-powered. When in doubt, always check with us before you pack.

Prohibited items — never accepted

  • Illegal drugs and narcotics
  • Weapons, firearms, ammunition and explosives
  • Flammable, corrosive, toxic or radioactive materials
  • Compressed gases and aerosols (e.g. gas canisters)
  • Fireworks, flares and other pyrotechnics
  • Counterfeit goods and pirated items
  • Cash, currency and negotiable instruments
  • Hazardous chemicals and pesticides
  • Stolen goods or anything of unlawful origin

Restricted items — allowed only with care or paperwork

These may travel, but only with the right declaration, packaging or documentation — talk to us first:

  • Lithium batteries and battery-powered devices (strict limits, especially by air)
  • Alcohol and tobacco (subject to destination duties and limits)
  • Perishable food (sea cargo only in most cases; not by air without arrangement)
  • Medicines and pharmaceuticals
  • High-value valuables such as jewellery and electronics
  • Cars, vehicles and parts (UK to Africa only, by RoRo or container — POA)
  • Liquids, creams and pressurised cosmetics

Destination rules vary by country

Each African country sets its own import restrictions, duties and documentation requirements. For example, Nigeria requires Form M and SONCAP for many goods. Because the rules differ by destination, we'll confirm what's allowed for your specific country before your cargo ships.

Frequently asked questions

Many non-perishable foods can travel by sea cargo, but perishable items and food by air need special arrangement. Check with us before packing, as destination rules vary by country.

Battery-powered devices and lithium batteries are restricted, especially by air. They can sometimes travel with the right declaration and packaging — please ask us first.

Contact us before you pack. WhatsApp or call +44 7735 369702, or email info@rolatsservicesdagenham.co.uk, and we'll confirm whether your item can be shipped to your destination.
